Career progression for teachers in the UK

Teaching is considered a rewarding career wherever you are in the world, whether it be a school of 50 students or a school of 300 – you are always able to make a difference.

Working with teachers on a daily basis as an Education Recruitment Consultant, I constantly hear about Australian teachers moving up the career ladder.

A lot of Australian teachers who are teaching in the UK don’t realise being a leader in a school could encompass a number of different roles, from taking charge of a year group or a particular key stage, all the way up to becoming a deputy or even a head teacher. In these areas you will have a large influence in the school, setting high standards, and ensuring continuous improvement throughout the school.

Although the majority of the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) consists of UK-trained teachers, there are a number of expats from Australia who have thrived within the UK. The teacher shortage means overseas trained teachers are able to hit the ground running within the education sector within a short period of time.

An example of this is Lauren, the new Early Years Co-Ordinator within a South West London Primary school. Lauren has been in the UK for the 2 year duration of her Tier 2 visa and was lucky enough to have been offered sponsorship.

“Working on a supply basis was ideal for me to begin with as it meant I had the flexibility to work and travel as much as I wanted.  A year into my visa the school I worked at on a regular supply basis needed a full-time Year 1 class teacher. Initially I was very hesitant but the possibility of sponsorship meant I had to accept. A year later I was sponsored and now into my third year teaching in London I have been appointed Early Years Co-Ordinator for my school.”
