Aussies in London, get ready to vote!

Australians in London who wish to vote in the 2016 Federal Election can cast their ballots in person from next week.

The Australian High Commission at Australia House will open its doors from Monday 20 June for eligible expat voters to have their say in who will run the homeland.

London-based president of ALP Abroad, Paul Smith, told Australian Times this election will be tight and every expat vote will count.

“This will be a very close election and we urge Australians in London to vote Labor for a country you can be proud of while overseas, provides free Medicare, housing you can afford, and good jobs when you return,” he said.

Historically, Australia House in London is in fact the largest polling station in federal elections, either at home or abroad. In 2013, over 15,000 votes were cast there.

If you live elsewhere in the UK though, you may wish to apply ASAP for a postal vote (go to www.aec.gov.au) as the London polling station is the only place in Britain where you will be able to cast your vote in-person.

And don’t leave it till election day, 2 July; because of the time difference, polls will have closed by then back home and so will Australia House. Friday 1 July will be your last chance.

Our advice though, get in early to avoid the after-work queues on election week.
