A cinematic hand grenade, Wolf Creek unites all the elements of classic horror movies to create a uniquely Australian ‘Boogieman’ in Mick Taylor. Now you can let Mick into your own home, as Wolf Creek is from this week available on a two-disc DVD which includes heaps of bonus material.
The story begins with three backpackers heading into the isolated Australian outback. After several days of driving, they finally arrive at Wolf Creek National Park and set up camp. The following morning they realise that their watches do not work and their car will not start.
As panic sets in, they notice strange lights heading straight for them and a friendly local offering help. This is where the real ‘fun’ begins, and the trio must face one of the most frightening madmen in the history of film.
Written and directed by Greg McLean, Wolf Creek is not based on any one story but echoes some of the elements of recent crimes of hideous unparalleled violence and brutality.
Also available on DVD from this week is the lost cult classic of the Australian New Wave of the 70s, Long Weekend. This is another sinister, eerie tale of nature at its most dangerous.
Urban couple Peter (John Hargreaves) and Marcia’s (Briony Behets) marriage is on the rocks. As a last ditch attempt to save their relationship, Peter arranges for the couple to spend the long weekend together camping at a remote beach on the Australian coast.
With Marcia preferring to stay someplace more luxurious, their romantic getaway gets off to a bad start — and then they hit an animal on the lonely road. When they finally reach their destination, they find that nature is not in an accommodating mood. As one disaster after another emerges, the tensions between Peter and Marcia rise to the surface. Preempting Open Water by 25 years, Long Weekend is a chilling meditation on modern life.
