The past two years have seen a number of capacity crowds for Antipodean Comedy Nights, New Act of the Year Finals (which are coming up again in May), Kevin Nights (all acts named Kevin — why is this such a popular name with comedians?) and visits from well known comedians such as Perrier Award Nominee, Will Smith.
But January is all about those comedians from south of the equator, with The Watershed putting on another Antipodean Comedy month. This has comedians visiting from South Africa in Glen Bo and Nick Cowan, Kiwis Sully O Sullivan and Kevin McCarron, and a healthy dose of Australians — Duncan Edwards, Matt Dyktynski, Aaron Counter, Ian McDonald, Pam Ford and Pete Jonas.
With two separate rooms The Watershed is an ideal venue for comedy. The largest has a stage and room for 200 but at the same time maintains the atmosphere and feel of a small venue. The bar is in the other room so comedy shows are undisturbed.
Well known comedy site, www.Chortle.co.uk, reviewed The Watershed and said, “Behind the deceptively uninspiring façade of this suburban club lies an undiscovered gem of a venue. For in the basement is a stylish, yet utterly unpretentious bar – and beyond that a largish theatre space – compete with proper stage, bar and sound system.”
After the comedy show ends, the club is open until 3am, with two different rooms of music — usually funk and disco classics in the bar with more up to date house, R&B and club classics in the main room. Time Out reviewed The Watershed: “The playlist at the smooth and chic Watershed floats between floor-filler disco and club classics, usually garnished with a generous slice of cheese.”
Laughing Horse Comedy takes place at The Watershed, 267 Broadway, Wimbledon, SW19 1SD, with comedy every Friday night (doors open 7:30pm, show starts 8:30pm). Tickets are £8 (£6 conc) and only £5 if booked through the websites. All prices include free entry to club after the show with dancing until 3am.
