The Sunday Supplement is a red hot comedy night set up by female sketch group 3 Girls in a Boat. But what makes this night different and why are the girls ones to watch for the future?
3 Girls in a Boat was set up by comedy actress and writer, Anne-Marie Draycott. “I’d gained lots of experience performing on the comedy circuit, but I wanted to do something a bit unusual,” she said. “A sort of modern day variety show, with great comedy characters.”
She found a kindred comedy spirit in Charity Trimm, (yes, that is her real name!) who earned her comedy stripes in shows such as Newsrevue, the long-running satirical show that launched the careers of Rory Bremner and Jon Culshaw. They met through Miranda Hart (star of BBC2’s new sitcom Hyperdrive) and discovered they had lots in common — they’re both from Yorkshire, find the same things funny and love M&S chocolate brownies!
Their comedy home is the aptly named Comedy Pub in Piccadilly.
“We love performing there,” says Charity. “It’s a really fun and friendly venue.” Because of its central location, not only does it attract their steadily increasing fan base, but also lots of tourists.
“If it was a traditional stand-up night, they might not get all the cultural references, but as our show offers such variety everyone has a good laugh,” says Anne-Marie. “And it doesn’t hurt that the venue has three bars!”
But it is not just the girls on the bill. They invite along the very best of London’s up and coming comedy talent, as well as an established headline act to end each show.
“We hand-pick a diverse mix of comedy acts for our show,” says Charity. “Stand up, sketches, musical comedy, magic.” This month they’ve even got funny poems and storytelling on the bill in the form of the brilliantly funny Paul Lyalls.
But 3 Girls in a Boat don’t just stop there. Last year they filmed a comedy pilot All At Sea that will be screened later this year, as well as busily preparing for their live stage show in the summer. So get on board and catch them while you can at The Comedy Pub.
