Platforms are a must. Flares? Yep, need them too. Add a bright vintage body shirt, gold neck chain and an afro and you’re set to show off your funky moves at Carwash – a discotheque-like nightclub dedicated to the fabulousness of the 70s and 80s in the West End.

Previously located in East London, the recently re-located Carwash celebrates the decades where Hypercolour, leg warmers and hot pants ruled, where Madonna was the queen of pop and go-go girls came by the dozen. It’s the club where these stereotypes and the decades’ fashion faux pas come back to life. Despite the seemingly strict dress rules on the website, we had no problems getting past the friendly bouncers to enter a world where the atmosphere is classy and the people look fabulous. Fellow party-goers actually made a great effort to dress in fashion from the eras and this made me feel like I had stepped back in time – literally.

The club is smaller than I expected, but the lesser crowd makes the bar easily accessible and there is little time wasted on lining up to buy drinks – definitely a plus. This also gives Carwash an exclusive atmosphere, like we’d been personally invited to join the revellers at Studio 54. Throughout the night bar-tenders passed around candy on a silver tray through the crowd and lovely bikini-clad girls circled above on giant disco balls. Later, the girls got out the kerosene and matches for fire-twirling and ‘angle grinding’ antics – certainly entertaining stuff.

Ultimately it’s the music that brings the club to life, and the DJ was spinning 70s and 80s funk tunes that kept the crowd on the dancefloor until the early hours of the morning. Polish those dance moves, dress to impress and get ready to witness the sparkling lights of the 70s and 80s for a few groovy hours at Carwash!
