After all, for many celebrities out there the entire point is to gather media attention. This means that whether good or bad, they continue to make a name for themselves. While you certainly can’t argue with results, there’s no denying the fact that this isn’t a foolproof plan. Becoming the subject of controversy could yield worldwide exposure – but it could also lead to being universally hated. As much as celebrities love the limelight, when it’s the kind that constantly ridicules them, it can be hard to see the bright side.
Australia, in particular, is an interesting country because it’s filled to the brim with controversial celebrities. Individuals who have become well-known worldwide, but not necessarily for being the very best they can be. It can still be said however that no publicity is bad publicity, because these individuals have certainly achieved worldwide attention for better or for worse.
When it comes to controversial figures, media tycoons are often one of the biggest examples. They’re almost always in the limelight for some reason or another, and they often generate positive and negative attention in equal amounts. Kerry Packer is known worldwide as the brainchild behind the World Series Cricket, which certainly can’t be understated. With regards to controversy, however, Packer is a special case.
For example, one of the things he has become most famous for was when his father, Frank Packer (another famous media tycoon) ordered his son to pressure Francis James, owner of a small publisher named Anglican Press. When they couldn’t get what they wanted, Kerry and his group began to vandalise the premises. This eventually led to a street fight that caught a large amount of media attention. Later on, in his life, Kerry would face charges of tax evasion and even ties to organised crime. While the charges were eventually formally dismissed, this did not stop the media from painting him in a mostly negative light.
While a media tycoon such as Kerry Packer would likely have generated controversy no matter what he did, there are some individuals out there that become universally hated despite the fact that they’re a simple radio host. One could say that it’s actually rather impressive what Kyle has done to generate all of the negative media attention over the years.
Appearing in Australian Idol, Big Brother, The X Factor, Australia’s Got Talent and more, Kyle Sandilands certainly has quite a few high-profile celebrity jobs under his belt. Unfortunately, being in the limelight only served to cement the fact that Kyle simple could not seem to get out of trouble. It was like no matter where he appeared, his ego was always getting the best of him time after time. Known for his temper tantrums and outbursts, it wasn’t long before Sandilands continued to get more and more exposure for his antics.
Unfortunately, this ended with him being one of the most hated, if not the most hated personality in Australia. Despite the fact that he hasn’t appeared in many shows that have aired worldwide, even those outside Australia twist their faces in disgust when they hear his name. While it’s debatable whether this could be considered a good thing for a person with celebrity status, being known for a severely inflated ego certainly isn’t getting him any friends or supporters.
The next individual on this list can be seen as something of a cautionary tale – how even some of the most beloved celebrities can suffer from a dramatic and complete fall from grace because of shockingly poor choices. Rolf Harris is well-known for being a man of very many talents. He’s a singer and songwriter, a composer, an actor, a comedian, and even a painter. As a matter of fact, until 2013 Rolf Harris was universally loved by the people as an extremely talented celebrity with many accolades under his belt. Unfortunately, this all ended when he was arrested for allegations of multiple sexual offences. He was eventually charged with twelve separate accounts of indecent assault on four female victims (teenage) during the 1970s up to the 1980s.
As much as some people want to see certain celebrities fall from grace, Rolf’s fall was not something anyone would have wanted. This was a highly celebrated personality, someone who seemed like they could do no wrong, and suddenly their entire world was turned upside down. He was eventually jailed for five years and nine months, being eventually released in 2017. By this point, it was already too late. He had been stripped of most if not all of his accolades, and despite spending a lifetime composing and singing and entertaining, he will now be most known for his criminal offences. To go from one of the most beloved to one of the most hated celebrities in Australia with worldwide attention, Rolf Harris is certainly worthy of this list.
- Lara Bingle. A model and media personality, she’s known more for all the trouble she gets into than her actual career, enough to be considered one of the most disliked celebrities in Australia.
- Anthony John Abbott. Known as the 28th Prime Minister of Australia, Abbott has had a storied and colorful career which culminated in his becoming the Prime Minister. While he has certainly done some good, he is considered to be one of the most hated in Australia because of certain controversial events.
To conclude, the life of a celebrity can be a harrowing one. It’s almost like balancing yourself on a tightrope, where no matter which direction you sway you eventually find yourself falling. Publicity in itself can sometimes be a trap because there are many individuals out there who reach celebrity stardom but are unable to handle the limelight. While no publicity is bad publicity, publicity in itself is not something everyone can take.
