Ancient Greece is perhaps the origin of most sports, where winners of sports categories received crowns made out of leaves. However, the earliest organised sporting event with official trophies dates back to the 15th century.
- Carlisle Bells (Horse racing)
On this list, the Carlisle Bells horse racing event is the oldest and dates back to the 1580s. The event by far awards the oldest sports trophy in the world. The winner of the horse racing event held in Carlisle, England, is given a Bell. As old as horse racing is, sports betting has always tagged along for the ride. Betting on horse racing became very popular during the reign of James the first. In those days, punters were allowed to stake their bucks on the’ final placement of horses that took part in each racing event, now the world of betting has become wildly popular with countless types of bets to place, from single bets to new nap for today bets.
- Wimbledon (Tennis)
Created in England in 1877, Wimbledon is the most prestigious tennis tournament in the world. The event organisers issued a trophy initially referred to as the field cup from inception until 1883. The challenge cup replaced the field cup from 1884 to 1886. During those times, the trophies were the personal property of whoever won the tournament. Later, the Wimbledon trophy was no longer the private property of the winner.
However, winners were allowed to take home replicas, which are usually smaller than the original displayed during the event—currently, the winner carts away nearly $3M in cash prizes. Roger Federer presently has the highest Wimbledon titles since the inclusion of professional tennis players.
- Scottish Cup (Football)
A couple of years before Wimbledon’s creation, the Scottish Cup came into the scene in the year 1874. While the event began towards the end of 1873, the last game was played in March 1874, making 1874 the first time the Scottish Cup was awarded to the winners. At the time, the trophy nearly cost £60, which is valued at over $7M in modern times. According to Guinness world record, the Scottish Cup Football event awards the oldest football trophy in the world.
- America’s Cup (Yacht Sailing)
The name of this sporting event might be a little misleading as this didn’t originate in the United States. America’s Yacht sailing cup event was created in the Isle of Wight, United Kingdom. However, the first winners in 1851 were a group of wealthy Americans, and the cup was named after them. Before that, the event was referred to as the 100 Guinea Cup. The trophy awarded to winners was crafted by Robert Garrard but was given to the Royal Yacht Squadron as the official racing trophy.
It’s considered one of the oldest international sports trophies in the world. This event is a match race, i.e., one team battling against another as it’s done in a boxing match. The challengers face off until a winner emerges with the right to race against the defending champion, who already has an automatic slot in every new tournament.
