The coronavirus (COVID-19) brought the world to a standstill as governments around the world went into lockdown mode in March and April 2020 to curtail the spread of the virus. Multiple sporting organisations around the world were forced to cancel or suspend their tournaments as they wanted to keep both the players and fans protected at all times.
Australian sports came to a complete standstill as both domestic and international games were suspended. Aussie punters who love watching their favorite sports and wagering on their favorite teams were disappointed as there was literally no international sporting action for them to wager on.

International Sports Impacted By Lockdown
Cricket: Cricket is the number one international sport in Australia and the Australian cricket team have been dominant in most formats of the game. Australia has to suspend their international games from March to early September due to the virus.
Cannot wait for the MCG
Cricket Australia (CA) ended up losing millions of dollars due to the cancellation of so many games and found themselves in a dark place. The biggest loss for Australian cricket in 2020 was undoubtedly the cancellation of the ICC T20 World Cup which was scheduled to take place in October 2020.
Since Australia was unable to open its international borders and welcome players from around the world for the T20 World Cup, the International Cricket Council (ICC) and CA decided to cancel the T20 World Cup in 2020. This not only impacted CA but also the country as Australia lost over $100 millions of dollars in revenue as the world cup brings in hundreds of thousands of tourists.
Players: The lockdown was also hard on domestic and international players as they were unable to have net sessions or practice. Some states also shutdown their gyms which meant that Aussie cricketers could not even get a decent workout. The lack of match practice, training and being locked down at home, caused a number of players to experience mental health concerns.
Aussie players were also asked to take a cut in their pay checks as CA was struggling with its finances. Some players enjoyed the downtime with their families but some players found being locked at home a difficult experience.
Rugby: Australians love their Rugby team but were disappointed by the poor showing that Australia had at the 2019 Rugby World cup when they lost to England in the quarter-finals in October 2019. Rugby fans were hoping that Rugby Australia would sort out the behind-the-scenes issues they were having and put together a Wallabies team that would once again be a force on the international scene.
Rugby Australia has been unable to do that due to COVID-19 as both domestic and international games were suspended. Rugby Australia also announced in May 2020 that they were facing a financial crisis brought about by the pandemic as well having major problems with the structure and competition.
Players: The news did not bode well for Australian rugby players and fans. Rugby is such a physical contact sport that it is imperative for players to train on a regular basis. The lockdown prevented them from doing so and brought a lot of stress with it due to the situation with Rugby Australia.
Tokyo Olympics: The 2020 Tokyo Olympics was scheduled to take place from 23 July to 9 August in Tokyo, Japan. However, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) was forced to postpone the Olympics to 2021 due to the pandemic. Australia were expected to send over a strong Olympic contingent but had to put those plans on hold.
Olympic athletes have been severely impacted by the pandemic as their training schedule was interrupted and many of them have had to sit and wait patiently to resume training.
Sports Resume: Australia is still battling COVID-19 but international sports have commenced. The Australian cricket team toured England for a T20 and ODI series and ended up losing the T20 series but winning the ODI series.
The Australian Football League (AFL) is also underway and tennis action is also slowly but surely picking up. Apart from Australian sports, there are also a lot of international sports that are underway which include Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), Formula One, NBA, NFL and badminton.
