Bangkok and its markets: where to visit?

Bangkok is an ideal holiday destination for complete relaxation. Many markets in the city are among the attractions that should not be missed.

Many travellers go there to buy quality products at a good price. For pleasure or for business, Bangkok is a destination that appeals to everyone. To find a great deal on flights to Bangkok check out flight comparison site momondo.

Here is a short guide to the markets in Bangkok!

1.Khlong Toey Fresh Produce Market

This fresh food market is one of Bangkok’s largest and busiest. Whatever you want to buy — fresh fruits or provide an entire restaurant with ingredients — you will find everything you need in this sprawling market.

Buildings and skyscrapers create a modern and flashy backdrop to the butchers cutting slices of fresh meat and vegetables that sold by the bunch.

The market is also a major food distribution centre in Bangkok so it is always busy, with plenty of things to see!

Getting there: Take the MRT to Khlong Toey stayion

2.Chatuchak Weekend Market

The Chatuchak weekend market is certainly the most famous market in Bangkok. This is a huge excavation pit with permanent shops, ideal for shopaholics. You can everything at Chatuchak Market — you just have to know where to look! I’ve spent hours going around in circles, looking for something I had seen on a previous visit but couldn’t remember the location. (Hint: if you see a booth that you really like, take note of its number and you’ll be able to find it).

Getting there: Take the BTS to Mo Chit station or the MRT to Chatuchak Park.

3.Pratunam Market

Ideally located in one of Bangkok’s most vibrant districts, Pratnuam Market is one of Bangkok’s booming markets. It offers mainly clothing but there are also different areas with other things, like Thai souvenirs.

It is a market for wholesalers, so it is not uncommon to see visitors from around the world who buy things in bulk at this market in order to sell them off back home.

Pratunam has a wonderful hotel to accommodate you when you are passing through Bangkok as well. There are many choices and options for housing. There are even some hotels like Novotel directly above the Platinum shopping centre.

When you’re tired of wandering around the aisles of stalls, you can enter the madness of Platinum mall, buy electronic products in Pantip Plaza or even take a hsort walk to the modern shopping mall Central World.

Getting there: BTS Skytrain Station, approximately 10 minutes walk from Chit Lom BTS Station.

4.Sampheeng Market

Yaowarat, Bangkok’s Chinatown, is one of the most vibrant and attractive parts of the city. There are streets full of Thai food vendors as well as many market stalls.

The most famous is that of Sampheeng, which seems to be an endless array of trinkets, jewellery, fabrics and everything you can imagine. The market is often crowded with buyers, food vendors and carts — all crammed into the narrow aisles.

Getting there: The easiest way to is to take a boat to the pier and then walk about 5 minutes to Ratchawong.

5.Saphan Phut Market

As a local night market in Bangkok, Saphan Phut is not well-known by tourists. Hwoever, if you’re interested to see the latest local trends or observe modern youth culture in Thailand, Saphan Phut is worth a visit. Many clothing and accessories are aimed at young people, and there are plenty of random stands (that change all the time!) to discover.

You might come across a collection of vintage rock band t-shirts or a stock of army clothes. Do not forget to test fried egg calamari, a dish common at Saphan Phut.

As with any other market in Bangkok, you never really know in advance what you will find!

Exploring the markets, buying delicious Thai food and souvenirs are among the many reasons why the city attracts so many visitors. Without the markets, Bangkok wouldn’t be the same!
