The Guelaguetza; not an infectious disease

Oaxaca

The lovely Mexican city of Oaxaca celebrates its big event of the year, the Guelaguetza.

The strongly traditional festival featuring colourful costumes and carefully choreographed dances was originally in honour of the country’s  most important crop, corn. It’s a bit like a Mexican Thanksgiving Since the Spanish Conquest; however, the Catholic angle is given as a tribute to the Virgin Mary.

This massive tourist attraction takes place over two consecutive weekends in the city’s purpose built outdoor stadium.
