Swans continue rich vein of form whiles Demons upset Wildcats
The Swans are running hot, the Wildcats lose another and the Lions are the silent achievers in AFL London.
In wintery conditions at Barn Elms, the Wandsworth Demons recorded a big victory in AFL London over arch enemies the West London Wildcats. After a slow start to the season the Demons have now really started to hit their straps and put out some ominous signs to the rest of the competition. Despite winning seven premierships the Demons have never managed to win back to back titles but 2011 might just be the year when they break that hoodoo.
On the other hand, the Wildcats commenced the year in some very strong form however over the last few weeks have really been dragged back to the pack. Kicking one goal, nine behinds to half time certainly didn’t help their cause however clearly the Demons mastered the conditions a lot better and deserved their 19-point win, 11.8 (74) to 7.13 (55). Best for the Wildcats were Chris Fortnum and Michael Searl who were both solid contributors all day.
In the earlier game, the undefeated Shepherds Bush Raiders continued on their merry way with another good victory over the previous second placed Clapham Demons while in the Social division, the Ealing Emus returned to the winners circle after their loss to Reading last week by defeating the previously undefeated South London Demons.
In the second premiership game of the round, the North London Lions recorded a big victory over the Wimbledon Hawks, 19.12 (126) to 7.6 (48). Best on ground was Adam Littlechild who booted eight goals for the Lions as well as Flynn Sager who booted three goals and played very well. Jason Elliot with two goals and Stephen Gill battled manfully for the Hawkers.
In the Conference game, the Regents Park Lions ran up a cricket score over the hapless Dulwich Dragons with David Strugnall (six goals) and Mick Hambley best for the Lions while the Bounds Green Lions completed a clean sweep for the North London club defeating the Balham Hawks.
In the last premiership game of the round, London Swans continued their great run of form by easily accounting for the Putney Magpies, 20.12 (132) to 10.9 (69). After showing some promising signs in the pre-season Anzac Cup, last year’s grand finalists the Magpies are starting to lose touch with the leading pack and will be desperately seeking a win in the coming weeks. Simon Hayes (six goals) and Grayson Stopp both continued their great form the Swans in yet another very impressive performance for the form team of the competition who may be shaping as a real darkhorse to challenge for the 2011 premiership honours!
In the Conference game, the London Swans rounded off another great weekend for the club with an impressive victory of the Hammersmith Magpies.
AFL London Round 6 Preview
The North London Lions host the Wandsworth Demons in the match of the round and after a very strong performance defeating the Wildcats, the Demons will be looking to consolidate their position at the top of the ladder and should sneak across the line in a close one over North London.
Looking to return to the winners circles after losing the last two games the West London Wildcats should bounce back with a vengeance against the London Swans this week and in what should be another close encounter, the Wildcats should square the ledger against and take the 4 points.
In the final game the Putney Magpies will be looking to keep in touch with the sides at the top of the ladder and although the Hawks should put up a strong fight, the Magpies should prevail.
