Putney back in finals contention while Dees defeat Swans

The Putney Magpies have reignited their finals hopes with a timely win over the Lions while the Dees accounted for the Swans and the Wildcats romped home over the Hawks in AFL London.

In last week’s Thursday night twilight game, the West London Wildcats recorded a large victory over the Wimbledon Hawks winning 16.12 (108) to 5.3 (33).  In a great display from the Wildcats EU players, the best players were the English dynamic duo of Sam Brunton and Lewis Brackstone, whilst for the Hawks, club president Nick Katsivelos was yet again the prime mover as well as coach  Mark Williams.

The Shepherds Bush Raiders continued on their merry way with a large win over Dulwich with Luke Kenelly, who booted seven goals, and Lachy Dowling with five majors the two stand out players, whilst the Ealing Emus recorded a win over the Balham Hawks with Ash Loxton and Casey Cordwell strong performers for the Emus, whilst Dave Daniels and Damian Beadel battled hard for the Hawks.

In the second premiership game of the round, the Putney Magpies breathed some life into their season beating the North London Lions.  In a high scoring game, and despite the best efforts of Quentin Keeble who booted nine goals and Courtney Shergold who also had a great game for the Lions, the Magpies still managed to run out winners 21.8 (134) to 18.12 (120). This result will put a huge dent in the Lions chances of ending the season with the all important double chance, whilst the Magpies can look to move back into the top four with wins in the last two rounds.

In the earlier conference game the Regents Park Lions went along way to securing a top two spot by defeating the Magpies with Rob Reynolds slotting five majors and veteran on-baller Jimmy Boot best for the Lions.

In the final game of the round, the Wandsworth Demons defeated the London Swans in a tight encounter that puts the Demons in the prime position to end up with a top 2 spot. The Swans season is now back in the balance after this loss, going down 15.12 (102) to 12.8 (80).  Best for the Dees were Kyle Sleep and Perry Wild, whilst Conor McCarthey and Will Green were solid performers for the Swans.

The Clapham Demons recorded another solid win as they look to build towards the finals with Ryan Curry easily best on ground with a great eight goal performance whilst for the Swans Dan Proud and David Mainsbridge battled hard.

The Reading Roos continued their great 2011 season in the social division when they defeated the Demons in a thrilling one point game.  Nathan Grindall and George Hepburn were the best players for the Reading side who are looking a big chance to break the dominance over the London sides when the social league finals commence in a few weeks.

AFL London would like to wish long standing league and Wandsworth Demons administrator, Sam Percy, a special best wishes message after he suffered some heart problems last week. On behalf of the league, we wish him a speedy recovery!

AFL London Round 9 Preview

This week sees some more great games of AFL London with a finals place on the line for the Hawks, Magpies and Swans.

In a must win match for the Wimbledon Hawks, who are looking to keep their slim chances of a finals berth alive, they will be hoping to turn the tables on the Demons after going down by a point in the earlier game of the season.  In a close encounter, and with so much to play for  for the Hawks, this may just provide the upset of the round!

The next game is equally as important for the Putney Magpies who’s season is also potentially on the line when they take on the Wildcats.  These two always seem to have a close game and given the Magpies have alot more to play for than the Wildcats the Magpies may run out winners in this contest.

In the final round of the game, North London host the London Swans and as per the other games the stakes are very high.  Given that neither team has secured their place in the finals, the Lions should run out winners in this clash.
