In yet another amazing round of AFL London footy, Putney booted eight goals straight in the last quarter to overrun the Hawks, while the Lions pipped the Demons.
In an exciting finish to the Putney and Wimbledon game, the Magpies booted eight straight in the final term to take the game 14.11 (95) to 8.9 (47). Greg Hesse playing in his 2nd last game for the club kicked three goals in 10 minutes from the midfield, whilst Clayton Fitzgerald and Paul Sosic also played great games for the winners. The Hawks were yet again disappointed to lose a close encounter and ever green on ball player Nick Katsivelos played his usual dominant game, whilst new recruit Jason Elliot continued his white hot patch of form. In the earlier game the Dulwich Dragons recorded their first victory of the year when they defeated the Putney Magpies which is great for the Dulwich club as well as the league.
The other exciting game of the round was when the North London Lionsstormed back from five goals down at three quarter time to defeat Wandsworth by just three points. 2010 league best and fairest winner Dan Morland was the man of the moment when he kicked the wining goal from a tight angle with 10 seconds to go. Best players for the Lions were Chris Capsalis, Dan Morland and Adam Littlechild. In the Conference game the Lions had a comfortable five goal win over Clapham, whilst in the Social game the Demons recorded a big victory over Bond Green.
In the final game of the weekend, with both sides severely depleted due to large numbers off at the races, the West London Wildcats turned the tables on the London Swans who had upset them three weeks previously, to record a cruisey 12.8 (80) to 2.9 (21) win. Best for the Wildcats were Adam Broadbent, who booted a match winning five goals, as well as captain Steven Puhar who also kicked two majors. In the earlier game, the undefeated Shepherds Bush Raiders, topped up with many regular Emus players managed to overcome the Swans, who were also missing key players. Ben Radloff and Julian Walton battled hard for the Raiders, whilst Gareth ‘Twang’ Long booted two majors in his once in a lifetime game for the Raiders. All eyes now turn to round 7 of the season where some fast and furious AFL London action is guaranteed as the season hots up in the run home to the finals!
AFL London – Round 7 Preview
In yet another cracking round of AFL London fixtures, this week sees two potentially season defining games on an AFL London SUPER SUNDAY round!
The London Swans host the Wimbledon Hawks on Saturday afternoon and with the other games not played til the Sunday could easily be sitting equal top of the ladder with a big victory over the Hawks. With that incentive on mind and looking to bounce back from last week’s defeat, the Swans should have too many guns upforward for the Hawks!
On Sunday the Wandsworth Demons, who will be still ruing the fact that they let North London come from five goals down at three quarter time last week, will look to return to their winning ways against the Putney Magpies. The Demons are usually hard to beat at the Common, however this week an upset is being predicted with Putney tipped to upset the Demons on their home patch in a game that Putney has to win to have any chance at all of finishing top 2 at the end of the season!
In the other Sunday game, a top of the table clash sees West London Wildcats take on the North London Lions fresh from a massive come from behind win last round. In what shapes as a massive game with the winner taking a decisive advantage into the last 3 rounds of the season, the stakes will be massive at Barn Elms. In yet another close encounter the Wildcats on their home turf should hold just enough aces to record an important victory, however this tip could certainly have been decided by a flip of a coin!
