Hawks and Lions open their 2011 accounts
AFL LONDON: In the second round of AFL London, the Hawks and Lions joined the Wildcats in the winners circle.
In round two of the AFL London competition, the Wimbledon Hawks, after showing some strong form in the pre season Anzac Challenge, had a good win against a slightly disappointing London Swans in round two of the AFL London competition.
In the conference game, the London Swans reserves side had a big win over Dulwich, whilst in the early game Balham (Wimbledon’s 3rds team) had a big win over Reading.
In the second game played on the Saturday, an undermanned West London Wildcats side, having lost a few boys to injury early in the day and playing most of the game with 16 on the ground had a come from behind win over the Putney Magpies. The Magpies certainly showed enough to suggest they will be right up there at the business end of the season though, with star forward Andrew Slevision bagging 8 goals for the Magpies, whilst for the Cats their co-coach Dan Prigmore played a great game.
Earlier, the Shepherds Bush Raiders continued their strong start to the season by defeating the Hammersmith Magpies, whilst in the social thirds comp, the Ealing Emus made it a clean sweep for the Wildcats club with victory over the Magpies.
On the Sunday fixture, the Wandsworth Demons hosted the North London Lions at Clapham Common and in a very tight tussle, the Lions opened their account by defeating the Demons. This tight game was yet another indication as to just how close the 2011 is shaping up to be with an number of the top teams capable on their day.
In the earlier games, the Demons took out both matches against their North London counterparts, which means that both the Demons reserve and thirds teams now remain undefeated for the season along with the Wildcats teams.
All eyes now turn to round 3 of the season where some fast and furious AFL London action is guaranteed.
