IN a first ever for Scotland, AFL Europe’s premier event the Euro Cup will be run and won in Edinburgh on 22 September.

AFL Europe General Manager Ben MacCormack views the event as a perfect opportunity for locals with an interest in Aussie Rules to get out and watch countries from all across Europe battle it out for the annual Euro Cup.

“We are excited this event is being hosted in the picturesque Edinburgh on the lush green surfaces of Peffermill Playing Fields. With the upcoming AFL European Challenge being played in London on 3 November, this is your chance to see and hear the game up close and personal,” MacCormack said.

The Euro Cup will see 16 men’s teams and 2 women’s teams battle it out to be called the king and queens of Europe for the next 12 months. Ireland are the current holders of the cup and will again prove tough opposition. Hosts Scotland has been drawn with the old enemy England, young guns Denmark and new comers Norway in the group of death this year. The Irish women won the inaugural women’s cup in 2010 and defended it in 2011. This year will see them play a European Crusaders team made up of players from Scotland, England, France and Italy.

“Thanks to local support from businesses Malones Bar and Mackbackpackers the event and functions are sure to be a huge success. AFL Europe is expecting a big crowd that will come and enjoy an amazing spectacle of high marks, speed, strength and amazing skill. Do yourself a favor and get down to Peffermill Playing Fields from 9am for this rare event in your own backyard,” MacCormack added.
