Paris beats Sydney and London as student city of the world

IT HAS BEEN revealed that Melbourne and Sydney are among the top 10 student cities in the world but they have been beaten by European cities Paris and London. The English capital was voted as the second best city in the world in which to be a university student, with the French capital claiming the top honour.

In a ranking of 50 global cities, Melbourne ranked fourth and Sydney sixth, with Paris, London, Boston and Vienna the other cities in the top six. Each city was ranked according to its quality of life and affordability, with the cities in the poll dictated by criteria stipulating that they have a population of 250,000 or above, and are home to a minimum of two top ranking universities.

The research, carried out and published today by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), initially considered just short of 500 cities for the top honours but then brought this down to a shortlist of 100 and are publishing the top 50. Meanwhile five Australian universities have been voted in the QS top 50 universities in the world – with the Australian National University in 26th, University of Melbourne 31st, University of Sydney 38th, University of Queensland 48th and University of New South Wales in 49th.
