Craig Emerson does the ‘Whyalla wipeout’ over carbon tax
Craig Emerson may be the new song and dance MP of the federal Labor government but a Peter Garrett he is not.
CRAIG EMERSON may be the new song and dance MP of the federal Labor government but a Peter Garrett he is not.
Dr Emerson was trending on social media site Twitter on Monday after he broke into song on the carbon tax to the tune of 1975 hit single, ‘Horror Movie’.
The trade minister began boogieing to the backing of the Skyhooks number at a doorstop press conference in Canberra before singing ‘no Whyalla wipeout, there on my TV’.
Comments on the micbroblogging site range from ‘what an idiot’, ‘Someone should tell Craig Emerson The Voice is over’, ‘Seriously, what was Craig Emerson thinking!?’ to ‘I thought it was one of the funniest things I’ve seen in ages!’
Dr Emerson’s reference to Whyalla follows 2011 comments from Opposition Leader Tony Abbott that the introduction of the government’s price on carbon emissions from Sunday would turn the South Australian industrial city into a ghost town.
Mr Garrett, the school education minister, was lead singer of one of Australia’s greatest rock bands, Midnight Oil, before he entered federal politics in 2004.
Mr Garrett later tweeted: “I think @CraigEmersonMP does a terrific job … as a Trade Minister.” – AAP
