Ask The Expert - Permanent Residency
Question:
I have an Australian passport with a 5 year UK Ancestry visa and I will shortly be eligible for permanent residency. It seems I can either apply for this by post or in person. What are the costs and time implications of these two methods?

Answer:
If you apply for permanent residency by post you must submit your passport and be prepared to wait up to 12 weeks for the Home Office to process the fully documented application. Their current fee for processing postal applications is £750.
Alternatively a premium service is available, by appointment, from a Public Enquiry Office; the Home Office fee for this same-day service is currently £950. You can use the services of an immigration consultancy for assistance with either of these methods if you wish. Remember that you will have to have passed the ‘Life in the UK Test’ at least 7 days before you apply for permanent residence.
