Foster’s chief quits ahead of SABMiller take-over

JOHN POLLAERS has quit as Foster’s CEO pending the take-over of the Australian brewer by British company SABMiller.
In a heartfelt letter to employees, Pollaers announced that Ari Mervis, the Asia Managing Director of the new parent company, would replace him when the take-over occurs him on 16 December.
He cited the turning around of an eight-year decline in market share as his biggest achievement during his 18-month tenure.
He congratulated his staff on their work and noted the pervasive role that beer and cider play in Australian culture, saying: “What we do matters and makes a difference in the lives of Australians every day”.
He also struck a lyrical note, noting the cohesive power of a social drink.
He said: “If a whole lot more people raised a beer in friendship, the world would be a better place.”
SABMiller chief executive Graham Mackay said: “John has made a significant contribution to the Foster’s business, putting in place a number of successful initiatives upon which we expect to build to further enhance Foster’s performance”.
Last week Foster’s shareholders voted to approve the $12.3 billion takeover, sending the iconic Australian brewer’s ownership offshore.
SABMiller is the world’s second largest brewer and owns over 150 beer brands including Miller, Peroni, Pilsner Urquell and Grolsh.
