Returned to Oz: 2010 the year of the hobbit

With all this New Year’s resolution talk, Katie Spain shares how she plans for 2010 to make her dreams come true, as well as the the plans for Aussie musicians backstage from Peat’s Ridge Festival.

Oh my God, oh my God…

Have you ever had a dream? A dream so secret and ridiculous you never bothered telling anyone?

I bet Lady GaGa used to fantasise about being famous enough to wear a dress made out of stuffed Kermits.

Beyonce probably used to want to shake her arse for the masses and I bet Britney wanted to be more than just a Mouseketeer.

I never wanted to be a singer (I can’t hold a note) and certainly never wanted to be a celebrity. My dreams were different; I wanted to be a hobbit.
It may sound weird but I’m not to blame for this secret Hobbit desire; my dad is.

When I was young, he used to tell me that I looked just like the Hobbits from Tolkein’s The Lord Of The Rings

He warned me that hair would eventually sprout from my feet and revealed that I was conceived when a travelling midget circus passed through our town.

Yes, I’m small and no, I’m not all that well adjusted. Are you surprised?
Later, when they finally made the movie, my father told me I should audition (since I was half Hobbit anyway).

“Do it kiddo… you won’t even need a costume!”.

Unfortunately I missed the cut-off date and my Hobbit dreams were dashed.
Until now.

Maybe it’s a sign of 2010 things to come but when I woke up this morning I saw my future.

Makers of The Hobbit, expected to begin filming in New Zealand early next year, are looking for extras. Should I do it? Hell yes.

It’s my dream for 2010.

I’m not sure what you Londoners did for New Year’s Eve but I avoided the tourist trap that is Sydney Harbour Bridge and ‘made like a hippie’ and camped out at Peats Ridge Festival.

It was a completely eco-friendly affair and included artists such as Lamb, Liam Finn, Jeff Martin (The Tea Party), Ash Grunwald, Sarah Blasko, The Panics and Bertie Blackman. The full moon even made an appearance.

During a chat with a few of the artists backstage, talk turned to New Year resolutions.

Ash Grunwald wants to catch more waves, Bertie Blackman wants to take some time off (she’s heading to London – see her) and Mama Kin told me to start the new year by following my heart.

Hobbiton here I come! They’re looking for Orcs too… if you’re as ugly as sin, this could be your year.

Jedward are to audition for The Hobbit. Read more here
