TheÂ 2011 ARIA AwardsÂ were presented in a star studded ceremony held at Allphones Arena in Sydney Olympic Park on 27 November before a capacity audience comprised of members of industry heavy weights and music fans.
The event kicked off with a “hair raising” performance by West Australian MC,Â DRAPHTÂ and included stunning performances byÂ GOTYEÂ andÂ KIMBRA,Â BOY & BEAR, ART vs SCIENCE, GURRUMUL with MISSY HIGGINS, CUT COPY, THE LIVING ENDÂ andÂ GUY SEBASTIAN, as well as a surprise appearance byÂ DELTA GOODREMÂ who performed a moving tribute to those artists who have passed away over theÂ ARIA AWARDS’Â 25 year history.
It was a special night forÂ ARIA HALL OF FAMEÂ recipients,Â KYLIE MINOGUEÂ andÂ THE WIGGLES, both of whom shared the night with their family and friends.Â PRIME MINISTER JULIA GILLARDÂ inducted our international pop princess,Â KYLIE MINOGUE, whileÂ Killing TimeÂ star,Â DAVID WENHAMÂ took on the induction duties forÂ THE WIGGLES. It was a double celebration forÂ THE WIGGLESÂ who also took outÂ BEST CHILDREN’S ALBUM, their tenth, forÂ Ukulele Baby!
Sydney quintet,Â BOY & BEAR, capped off a busy year by winning fiveÂ ARIA AWARDSÂ for their critically acclaimed, self-produced, debut album,Â Moonfire.Â The band, who has already won accolades like Rolling Stone’s Artist to Watch of 2010 and triple j’s Unearthed Artist of the Year, wonÂ BEST ADULT ALTERNATIVE ALBUM, BREAKTHROUGH ARTIST – SINGLE, BREAKTHROUGH ARTIST – ALBUM, BEST GROUPÂ and the covetedÂ ALBUM OF THE YEARÂ for 2011.
Capping off an extraordinary year,Â GOTYEÂ has taken out the much covetedÂ ARIA AWARDSÂ in the categories ofÂ SINGLE OF THE YEAR, BEST POP RELEASEÂ andÂ BEST MALE ARTISTÂ adding to the three Awards (PRODUCER OF THE YEAR, BEST VIDEOÂ andÂ ENGINEER OF THE YEAR) already bestowed at the ARIA Awards Nominations Event in early October, all for the hit single,Somebody That I Used to Know (feat. Kimbra).
New Zealand born,Â KIMBRA, who rose to fame in 2011 for her work withÂ GOTYE,Â has taken out her first soloÂ ARIA AWARDÂ asÂ BEST FEMALE ARTISTÂ for her debut album,Â Cameo Lover.
Singer/songwriterÂ KASEY CHAMBERSÂ has proven that she is Australia’s official Queen of Country Music taking out her ninthÂ BEST COUNTRY ALBUMÂ Award for her 5th solo album,Â Little Bird.In anÂ ARIA AWARDSÂ first, the legendaryÂ BILLY THORPEÂ has posthumously won anÂ ARIA AWARDÂ for his final masterpiece,Â Tangier.Â Collecting theÂ ARIA AWARDÂ on the night were Billy’s wife, Lynn, and daughters Lauren and Rusty.
Two-timeÂ ARIA AWARDÂ winners,Â THE AUDREYS,Â collected their thirdÂ BEST BLUES AND ROOTS ALBUM,Â for their third album,Â Sometimes the Stars.
Sydney three-piece,Â ART VS SCIENCE, who in 2008 were named triple j’s Unearthed Artist of the Year, tonight added their firstÂ ARIA AWARDÂ to their mantles for their debut album,Â The Experiment,Â taking out the Award forÂ BEST INDEPENDENT RELEASE.
West Australian MC,Â DRAPHT, whose albumÂ The Life of RileyÂ debuted at No. 1 on the ARIA Album Chart, has taken out his firstÂ ARIA AWARDÂ forÂ BEST URBAN ALBUM.
Three time ARIA Award winners,Â THE LIVING END, added two more pointy trophies to their collection taking out the hotly contestedÂ BEST ROCK ALBUMÂ Award for their 6th long player,Â The End is Just the Beginning Repeating. The hard-rocking threesome also took out the inauguralARIA Public Voted Award, presented by HP and Intel,Â in the category ofÂ MOST POPULAR AUSTRALIAN LIVE ARTIST.
Radio and TV funny men, and all round nice guys,Â HAMISH & ANDYÂ have won their secondBEST COMEDY RELEASEÂ ARIA Award, this time for theirÂ Celebrating 50 Glorious YearsÂ Album.
Sydney hard rock outfit,Â FRONT END LOADER, won their first ARIA Award today taking out theBEST HARD ROCK/HEAVY METAL ALBUM AWARDÂ and Melbourne dance outfit,Â CUT COPY, also took out their first Award forÂ BEST DANCE RELEASE.
Taking out the Awards forÂ HIGHEST SELLING ALBUMÂ of 2011 wasÂ ALTIYAN CHILDSÂ for his self titled debut album and four-time ARIA No. 1 Chart Award and ARIA Award winner,Â GUY SEBASTIANÂ took out theÂ HIGHEST SELLING SINGLEÂ Award forÂ Who’s That Girl?
